Shailene Woodley will test her box-office mettle against Tom Cruise next summer

The actress’ “The Fault In Our Stars” has just been slated to face off against the “Top Gun” star’s science-fiction action film “Edge of Tomorrow” on June 6, 2014.

The formidable competition is a sign that Twentieth Century Fox, which is distributing “The Fault In Our Stars,” has great confidence in the actress and the material. Woodley has attracted critical raves for her work in films like “The Descendants” and “The Spectacular Now,” but many observers expect that she is poised to break into full-fledged stardom with the release of the young-adult fantasy adaptation “Divergent” next spring.

Like “Divergent,” “The Fault In Our Stars” is based on a book that is popular with teens. The John Green novel follows a young cancer patient who falls in love. Willem Dafoe and Laura Dern co-star, and Josh Boone directs from a script by “The Spectacular Now’s” Michael H. Weber and Scott Neustader.

In addition, Fox  said it will move its adaptation of the fantasy series “The Maze Runner” from Feb. 14, 2014, to Sept. 19, 2014. In its new date, the movie will square off against the family film “Dolphan Tale 2” and the sports drama “When the Game Stands Tall.”

Wil Poulter (“We’re the Millers”) stars in the adaptation of James Dashner’s dystopian fantasy about a community of boys trapped in a maze.
