‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Whips Past $300 Million Worldwide

The Universal Pictures release has now grossed $102.7 million domestically and $209 million at the international box office

“Fifty Shades of Grey” has made over $300 million worldwide, according to box office figures Universal Pictures released on Thursday.

The adaptation of E.L. James‘ erotic romance novel has grossed an estimated $102.7 million domestically and $209 million at the international box office, bringing the worldwide cume to $311.7 million.

The steamy blockbuster starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson as BDSM practitioners Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, respectively, has broken a number of records since its impressive Valentine’s Day weekend debut when it opened at No. 1 in 54 territories.

A $55 million international gross on Saturday alone made it the highest-grossing Valentine’s Day release ever, as well as the studio’s highest-grossing day ever.

Domestically, “Fifty Shades” became the highest-grossing February weekend opening, the highest Valentine’s Day weekend opening, the highest Valentine’s Day opening and the top President’s Day weekend opening of all time.

Overall, Sam Taylor-Johnson‘s drama made box-office history by having the largest opening weekend for a female director ever, with an $85.2 three-day haul. It’s Universal’s top R-rated opening, and the studio’s third-highest opening ever behind Universal’s “Fast Five” and “Fast & Furious 6.”

“Fifty Shades” is dominating the music industry, too. The soundtrack has already sold over 250,000 units in the U.S. alone, marking the best first week of sales for a theatrical feature soundtrack since “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” in 2009, and the best debut for a multi-artist compilation soundtrack since 2005.

Currently, it sits atop the Billboard Soundtrack Chart.

Box office analysts expect “Fifty Shades” to beat out this weekend’s new releases “Hot Tub Time Machine 2,” “The DUFF” and McFarland, USA” with an estimated $30 million or higher addition to its domestic total.
