FilmLA had strong numbers to report for its quarterly update of on-location shooting in Los Angeles. With 10,127 shoot days logged by film and television productions, it’s the highest count since Q4 of 2018 and up 3.4% from last quarter.
The increase from Q2 2021 is attributed to a rise in feature film shooting with 1,100 days logged this quarter, a 33.5% increase from quarter to quarter. Among the recent films shooting in L.A. are Paramount’s “Wild Chickens” and an untitled project directed by Jonah Hill.
FilmLA has also created a new “pre-COVID average” to measure the average shooting days for each quarter between 2016 and 2019. Against this average, overall shooting for Q3 2021 is ahead by 6%. Third quarter shooting for TV productions is up by 22%, with pilot shooting up 56% and reality TV production up a staggering 146%.
“The biggest takeaway from this report is that the pace of local production continues to increase,” said FilmLA president Paul Audley. “The late-pandemic recovery is uneven in some ways, but community receptiveness to filming is steady and the work opportunities are undeniably there.”
Among the TV projects filmed in L.A. this past quarter are CBS’ “NCIS: Los Angeles,” NBC’s “Mr. Mayor” and “This Is Us,” and ABC’s “The Rookie.” Cable series filmed include FX’s “Better Things” and Adam McKay’s untitled series on the 1980s Showtime Lakers for HBO. Streaming series filmed include Hulu’s “PEN15” and Netflix’s “The Monster”
