The last trailer for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” debuted Thursday on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” two months before the film is set to be released in theaters. You can watch this deepest dive into “Rogue One” yet above.
“Rogue One” takes place between the prequel and original trilogies as the Empire’s hold on the galaxy continues to strengthen. A ragtag rebel militia led by Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), are sent in to pull off a mission that could be the last chance to defeat the Emperor. Their job: steal the plans to the Death Star. Among her allies are Rebel intel officer Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), Force warrior Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen), and Clone War veteran Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker).
Notably, the trailer gives us our first look at Mads Mikkelsen in the film. We knew Mikkelsen plays Galen Erso, the father of main protagonist Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), but he had yet to be seen in any of the marketing for “Rogue One.”
But now we get a good long look at where the elder Erso falls in this conflict, and we see that it’s in a very important place indeed, seemingly as the architect of the planet-killing weapon. We also see that this family connection is the reason the Rebels recruit Erso to nab the Death Star plans — the hope is that she can find her father and convince him to help out.
Though there isn’t a whole lot of other new info to be gleaned from the final “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” trailer, new footage abounds, so much of which is really impressive — every new look we get of “Rogue One” further demonstrates the striking non-traditional style that director Gareth Edwards brought to the film.
A new poster featuring the entire main cast was unveiled by Edwards, who appeared on “The Star Wars Show” to discuss the film. The poster also feature Imperial forces on the tropical island of Scarif, which will be featured prominently in the new film.
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel, with John Knoll and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers. The film stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. James Earl Jones will return to the “Star Wars” series to voice Darth Vader in a cameo.
“Rogue One” will arrive in theaters December 16.
