The unusual writing and recording process that the Foo Fighters used to record its upcoming eighth album was captured on camera by frontman Dave Grohl, and will form the basis of a new documentary series that will air on HBO.
The band took a road trip to eight different cities — Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington, D.C. and New York — to write and record with local musical legends. Every stop produced one new song, the lyrics for which Grohl wrote on the last day of the session in each city.

The band promises that each song will tap into the “experiences, interviews and personalities that became part of the process,” as well as the history of each city. The documentary will also celebrate the Foo Fighters’ 20th anniversary.
Grohl made his directorial debut last year with the documentary “Sound City,” about the famed titular Van Nuys, Calif., recording studio that housed legends such as Nirvana, Neil Young, and Tom Petty.
