Former ‘SNL’ Star Taran Killam Says Trump ‘Struggled to Read’

Actor offers biting behind-the-scenes take on president

Here’s one to add to the long list of grievances much of Hollywood has waged against President Trump: his poor reading skills.

Former “Saturday Night Live” star and Trump impersonator Taran Killam said as much in a recent interview with Brooklyn Magazine, explaining that Trump acted exactly as he expected and was easy to read — though the same cannot be said for POTUS’ comprehension of the comedy show’s script.

“He struggled to read at the table read, which did not give many of us great confidence,” the actor, now a star in the hit Broadway show “Hamilton,” said. “What you see is what you get with him, really. I mean, there was no big reveal.”

A precursor to Trump’s tense relationship with “SNL,” Killam went on to say that working with the then-candidate was an unpleasant experience for all involved. He said Trump’s appearance felt forced and unnatural.

“I didn’t get the feeling that he was excited to be there, and it felt like a move for ratings from both sides,” he said. “It was not fun, and most of the cast and writers were not excited to have him there.”

Killam isn’t the first “SNL” cast member to disparage Trump’s reading skills. Pete Davidson told Opie Radio that the president “doesn’t really know how to read” soon after his episode aired in 2015.
