Fox Will Release 5 Animated Movies a Year in 2017, 2018

DreamWorks Animation and Blue Sky Studios will step up their game

Fox will release five animated movies in both 2017 and 2018, the studio announced on Monday, further demonstrating its desire to dominate the feature animation game.

Though none of the 10 movies dated for 2017 and 2018 have titles, that tally surpasses anything Fox or any other studio has done in recent memory. Pixar releases just one movie a year while its parent studio Disney releases some of its own animated movies as well – but not five.

Sony and a few others have released a movie or two.

The two-year animated slate also means Fox's two suppliers – Blue Sky and DreamWorks Animation – will combine to make more movies per year than ever before.

Fox's own Blue Sky Studios has been a steady supplier of hits, but produced about one movie per year over the past decade.  Fox's new animation partner, DreamWorks Animation, typically produces two movies a year – and made three in 2010.

Animation has become one of the most lucrative areas of feature filmmaking, prompting several smaller distributors to get in the game.

That's why Fox made the deal with DreamWorks Animation and why it's eager for its dual-headed hydra to up the ante in years to come.
