FX Picks Up New Elijah Wood Comedy

“Wilfred” tells the story of a man and his best friend … another man, in a dog suit

FX has ordered 13 episodes of "Wilfred," a live-action comedy series starring Elijah Wood that’s based on the Australian series of the same name, the network announced Monday.

Wood plays an introvert who meets Wilfred (Jason Gann, who co-created the original version and played the title character in that series as well), a character described by pilot writer David Zuckerman as “part Australian Shepherd, part Russell Crowe on a bender.” The world sees Wilfred as a dog while Wood’s character Ryan sees Wilfred as a man dressed in a dog suit.

This will be Wood’s first starring role in series television. “We loved how well the pilot turned out, and we were blown away by the chemistry between Elijah Wood and Jason Gann,” said Nick Grad, FX’s executive vice president of original programming. “It’s a very unique concept and we think David Zuckerman has a great take on it.”

"Wilfred" joins "Louie," "Archer," "The League," and breakout hit "It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia" on the network’s comedy roster.
