Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot during a shooting spree in Arizona last year, announced on Sunday she will resign from her Congressional seat to focus her attention on her ongoing recovery.
"I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona I will step down this week," Giffords said in a video that was posted on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.
"I'm getting better. Every day my spirit is high. I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country. Thank you very much."
Giffords, who is serving her third term, will attend President Barack Obama's State of the Union address to Congress on Tuesday, and is expected to submit her letter of resignation to Arizona governor Jan Brewer and House Speaker John Boehner later in the week. A special election will determine Giffords' replacement.

Giffords was shot in the head on Jan. 8, 2011 when a gunman opened fire at a constituents outreach event outside a supermarket in Tucson, killing six people and injuring 12.
Jared Lee Loughner, the accused gunman, is currently being held in a Missouri prison, where he has been forcibly medicated with psychotropic drugs in an effort to make him mentally fit to stand trial.
