(Spoiler alert: Please do not read on if you haven’t watched Sunday’s Season 6 premiere of “Game of Thrones”)
The last two minutes of the season premiere of “Game of Thrones” actually distracted fans otherwise preoccupied by Jon Snow’s fate, with many taking to Twitter to post hilarious memes and GIFs about Melisandre’s huge reveal instead.
In the episode, Melisandre (Carice Van Houten) takes off the necklace she has worn for most of the series up to this point, after it appears the God of Light has failed her. Once the camera briefly pans away from the mirror she’s looking at, we see an aged Melisandre.
“That moment u realize that you’ve been catfished for 7 years,” said Twitter user Memdalet.
“Tinder vs. Real-Life,” Buzzfeed’s Jarett Wieselman tweeted.
In previous interviews, the actress has spoken about Melisandre’s actual age, saying she’s well over 100 years old. Now, she has told Entertainment Weekly that she was “really happy when I read that we were going to reveal that this year. I don’t think a lot of people will see that coming. It makes her immediately more vulnerable, but also more wise and even more mysterious. There’s also a vulnerability in her age.”
