Gamers Call for Online Ceasefire to Honor Shooting Victims (Video)

GamerFitNation CEO Antward Pearman calls for Friday to be a no-shooter game day

A group of online videogamers are calling on their comrades-in-arms to lay down their virtual weapons on Friday to honor the victims of the Newtown, Conn. shootings.

The campaign, launched by GamerFitNation CEO Antwand Pearman, calls for gamers to abstain from playing shooter games all day on Friday as a tribute to the 20 children and six women killed at an elementary school.

"What am I asking for? I'm asking for a demonostration — a demonstration of peace," Pearman said in a video he posted to YouTube. "I'm asking for a day, just one day, from 12-12, when you just don't play online shooters."

As pundits and politicians point fingers at violent videogames as the reason for increased violence in real life, Pearman said he wants to prove the gamers are as upset as anyone else.

"It's not to say videogames are to blame," he said. "It's more to show people that we gamers give a damn."

So far, the video isn't necessarily sweeping the gaming community: Posted Sunday, it had a modest 9,000 views as of Wednesday morning. But the hashtag #osceasefire is getting traction on Twitter, and Anonymous, the amorphous hacktivist collective, has tweeted its support.
