Gina Prince-Bythewood to Receive Filmmaker Honor from American Cinema Editors

The editors guild’s 73rd annual Eddie Awards will also celebrate Don Zimmerman (“Coming Home”) and Lynne Willingham (“Breaking Bad”)

Gina Prince-Bythewood will be awarded the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, an honor bestowed by the American Cinema Editors guild. The 53-year-old director, whose prolific filmography includes “Love & Baskeball” (2000), “Beyond the Lights” (2014), “The Old Guard” (2020), and the current critical and box office hit “The Woman King,” will be presented with the award at the 73rd annual ACE Eddie Awards on March 5, 2023.

The organization will also honor two veteran film editors for their career achievements: Don Zimmerman, an Oscar nominee for “Coming Home,” whose credits include “Being There,” “The Prince of Tides,” and “The Nutty Professor;” and Lynne Willingham, a two-time Emmy winner for “Breaking Bad” whose work includes “The X-Files,” “Ray Donovan,” and Showtime’s current “American Giglio.”

“A supremely versatile trailblazer from day one of her career, Gina Prince-Bythewood has consistently entertained us with intimate films and global blockbusters that explore the human experience through formidable female characters,” said ACE president Kevin Tent, ACE. “A champion of diverse, character-driven narratives, her latest film “The Woman King” is the crown jewel of a career spent pushing boundaries and telling stories that touch our hearts and minds. She is a proud supporter of the editing community and we’re so thrilled to honor her with the Golden Eddie.”

Tent added, “We are so excited and thrilled to honor Don and Lynne, two outstanding editors, for their incredible contributions to film editing history,” stated Tent. “These two extraordinary editors are responsible for editing some of the most entertaining, moving and thrilling movies and television shows of our time. They are so deserving of their career achievement honors and we look forward to celebrating them at this year’s ACE Eddie Awards.”

According to the organization, the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award recognizes “an artist who exemplifies distinguished achievement in the art and business of film.” Prince-Bythewood will join a list of past recipients that includes Spike Lee, Christopher Nolan, Guillermo del Toro, Martin Scorsese, and George Lucas, among others.
