Netflix will release a film adaptation of the famed “Carmen Sandiego” educational series in 2019, with “Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez playing the titular globetrotting criminal.

Rodriguez will also produce the feature-length film through her I Can And I Will banner alongside Kevin Misher and Caroline Fraser, with Andy Berman as executive producer. Rodriguez had already been signed by Netflix to play Carmen in an animated series that will also hit the streaming service next year.

Beginning as an educational computer series created in 1985, “Carmen Sandiego” exploded in popularity in the 90s with two PBS game shows and and animated series that combined to win eight Daytime Emmys and a Peabody Award.

Rodriguez most recently starred alongside Natalie Portman in Alex Garland’s sci-fi horror film “Annihilation,” and will star in Catherine Hardwicke’s remake of the Oscar-nominated Mexican drug drama “Miss Bala,” due out next year. She is repped by CAA, Karl Austen, and 42West.
