Starz’ “The Girlfriend Experience” is based on the Steven Soderbergh 2009 film of the same name, and follows one woman’s journey into the world of high-end escorts.
“I don’t think we should shy away from it, it’s high end prostitution,” executive producer and star Amy Seimetz told TheWrap at the Sundance Film Festival.
The series stars Riley Keough as Christine, a law student who is introduced to her new profession by a friend.
“She’s really driven and likes power and control,” Keough said. “She channels that into her law career and then sort of switches when we start the show.”
The star and producers don’t consider the show critical of women who are in this profession, and stress that Christine chooses her career and enjoys it.
“Because that’s the story we’re telling, we talked to a lot of [retired] GFEs,” Keough said. “Ones who really enjoyed it, and felt like they got control, and loved sex, similar to Christine.”
“The Girlfriend Experience” premieres in April on Starz.
