Come on, shake your body, baby, do the conga, ’cause Gloria Estefan is finally heading to Netflix’s “One Day at a Time.”
The Grammy Award-winning singer announced the news of her upcoming guest star appearance in a video Monday. “I’ve been waiting three seasons for this, people!” she sang out in the clip, which was accompanied by the reveal she will be playing Mirtha, Lydia’s (Rita Moreno) baby sister and arch-nemesis. “I’m coming for you, Alvarez family!” the legend wrote.
Netflix confirmed Estefan will guest star in an episode of “One Day at a Time”‘s upcoming third season. Fans have been clamoring for the singer, who is the voice behind the series’ theme song — a Cuban-tinged cover of the original comedy’s opener — to appear on the series pretty much since it premiered.
A reimagining of the iconic Norman Lear’s classic sitcom, “One Day at a Time” follows three generations of a Cuban-American family navigating the ups and downs of life. A newly-single mom and military veteran journeys through the triumphs and tribulations that come with raising two strong-willed, mega-millennial children, all the while enlisting the “help” of her old-school mother and her building manager-turned-invaluable confidant.
The Netflix series stars Justina Machado, Rita Moreno, Stephen Tobolowsky, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez and Marcel Ruiz. Norman Lear executive produces, with Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce executive producing and co-showrunning. Brent Miller also executive-produces. “One Day at a Time” is produced by Sony Television Productions for Netflix.
