‘GMA’ Beats ‘Today’ in May Sweeps for First Time in 19 Years (Updated)

The ABC morning news show marks another triumph over its flagging NBC competition

ABC's "Good Morning America" notched another victory over NBC's "Today" with Friday's announcement that it had won May sweeps in both the key demo and total viewers for the first time in 19 years.

During the May sweeps period, "GMA" attracted 1.8 rating/13 share and 2.1 million viewers per episode in the advertiser-coveted key news demo of Adults 25-54, 110,000 more than "Today" (1.7/12, 1.99 million viewers) for the first time in 19 years.

"GMA" also won in total viewers with an average 5.7 million, 921,000 more than the NBC morning news show, for the first time in 18 years.

Both wins represent the largest margin that "GMA" has beaten "Today" in 21 years for total viewers and 19 years for the key demo.

The May sweeps win follows "GMA's" continued winning streak for total viewers for all 34 weeks of the current season, its longest run of No. 1 finishes since the 1992-1993 season. It also marks its third consecutive sweeps win in total viewers and the news key demo.

CBS's "This Morning" came in a distant third earning a 0.9 rating/6 share and 1.06 million viewers in Adults 25-54 and 3 million total viewers during May sweeps. The numbers did show growth for the morning show. Year over year, it shows a 13 percent growth in the key news demo and a 19 percent increase in total viewers, its largest margin of growth in 20 years.
