‘Gravity’ Behind-the-Scenes Featurette Takes Audiences From Script to Screen (Video)

Director Alfonso Cuarón and his team, including stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, explain their vision for the Oscar contender

One of the few criticisms of Alfonso Cuarón’s “Gravity” was the simple story arc, but a new behind-the-scenes featurette that takes audiences on a production journey from script to screen sheds a new light on the complicated themes viewers may have missed.

“In the writing process, we knew that we wanted to express the things not in a rhetoric way, but through visual metaphors,” Cuarón says in the video (above). “The possibility of rebirth as an outcome of adversaries, and Earth as a constant presence reminding us where we come from and where human connection is, where life is.”

“Gravity” stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as American astronauts struggling for survival after comets destroy their spaceship.

Although the filmmakers behind the Warner Bros. release created new techniques to pull off the dazzling production, producer David Heyman says it was the story — not the special effects — that drove them.

“The technology was never the motivation for making the film,” Heyman explains. “We wanted to tell a story, and it was about developing the technology that was the only way that this story could be told.”
