‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Kevin McKidd Talks Sarah Drew’s Exit: ‘Owen Hunt Is Going to Struggle’

“He’s only had to do half the work because April Kepner’s been there helping him run the ER,” actor tells TheWrap

Not only will “Grey’s Anatomy” star Kevin McKidd miss his co-star Sarah Drew, but his character Dr. Owen Hunt might just be a little lost without Dr. April Kepner to help run the ER at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

“I think Owen Hunt is going to struggle. I think he doesn’t realize how good he has had his life these last few years,” he told TheWrap in a recent interview.

“You know, he’s had all these tumultuous relationship problems and stuff, partly probably because he’s only had to do half the work because April Kepner’s been there helping him run the ER,” the actor and director said. “Now, Owen is going to have to run the ER pretty much full time. So hopefully he’s gonna have less personal life drama, because he’s going to be so busy at work.”

Because their characters worked so closely together on the show, that permeated into the actors’ real lives as well. “[I] spent so much time with Sarah, because we worked in the same field. I’m just gonna miss her.”

McKidd added that Drew was even shadowing him to learn more about directing when she found out that she wouldn’t be returning.

“She was shadowing me potentially to direct,” he said. “So we’re very close.”

Watch the full interview above to hear McKidd talk more about Drew, being renewed for a landmark 15th season, and how Dr. Hunt will learn how to be a foster parent.

“Grey’s Anatomy” airs Thursdays on ABC at 8 p.m. The Season 14 finale airs May 17.
