HBO, NBC Dominate Sports Emmys

Networks take home seven awards apiece, edging CBS, ESPN; Al Michaels honored for lifetime achievement

HBO and NBC Sports were the big winners at the 32nd annual Sports Emmy Awards Monday night, garnering seven Sports Emmys apiece.

That was enough to edge CBS Sports, which grabbed six, and ESPN, which took home five.

The winners – selected by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences — were announced at a ceremony held at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center.

HBO’s “Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the New York Jets” won three, as did NBC’s coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

ABC took three, too, including the Sports Emmy for outstanding live coverage for its broadcast of the 2010 World Cup Final.

Bob Costas won the Emmy for outstanding studio host for his work on NBC and the MLB Network; NBC’s Mike Emrick won for play-by-play.

Kirk Herbstreit won for his studio analysis on ESPN’s college football coverage; “College Gameday,” which Herbreit co-hosts, also won a Sports Emmy.

Al Michaels, the voice of NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,” was presented with a lifetime achievement award at the event.
