HBO Teams with Vice, Bill Maher for News-Magazine Show

Weekly news magazine "Vice" will be executive produced by Bill Maher, with Fareed Zakaria serving as consultant

HBO has found a new 'Vice' to indulge in.

The cable network is partnering with the Vice entertainment company to create a news magazine series to be titled — what else? — "Vice."

The weekly show will be hosted by "Vice" founder Shane Smith, who will executive produce along with "Real Time" host Bill Maher and Eddy Moretti, Vice's chief creative officer.

CNN personality Fareed Zakaria will serve as a consultant for the series.

According to HBO, the series will "showcase a mix of stories from around the globe." Segments currently being produced for possible airing include pieces on child suicide bombers in the Taliban, underground voodoo heroin clinics in New York, and Satanic dentists in the Pacific Northwest.

“Vice has emerged as a premier new media brand through a savvy combination of irreverence, smarts and fearlessness,” Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming, said of the venture. “We are excited to offer a forum for their groundbreaking style of news coverage and look forward to a show that’s like nothing else on TV.”

The new series is the latest step in Vice's expansion into mainstream media. Initially an irreverent magazine, the media company, in 2010 the company partnered with CNN to air video footage of its trip to North Korea on CNN.com.
