A year after seeing its 17-year streak as the most-nominated network end in 2018, HBO started a new one on Tuesday by bagging 137 noms for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards.
Netflix drew 117 nominations. Both networks were up from their 2018 count. Last year, Netflix topped HBO 112 to 108, the first time HBO came in second since 2000.
Netflix and HBO were the only two to have their nomination count in the triple digits.
“Game of Thrones” led all shows with 32 nominations for its final season, a record for a single season. “Game of Thrones” now has 161 nominations, adding to its already-record amount. HBO had three of top five most-nominated shows with “Chernobyl” getting 19 and “Barry” drawing 17 nominations, up from the 13 it drew for its first season.
“Veep” also returned to Emmy eligibility for its own final season, getting nine nominations including Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Lead Actress (adding to her own record) in a Comedy and Outstanding Comedy Series.
Netflix, which didn’t have its top-two nominated shows from last year eligible this time around, was led by “When They See Us” (16) and “Russian Doll” (13). The streamer’s nature docuseries “Our Planet” also grabbed 10 nominations, and “Ozark” drew nine nods including ones for Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, as well as Outstanding Drama Series. The interactive “Black Mirror” movie “Bandersnatch” was also nominated for Outstanding Television Movie.
