A sneak peek of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey", which aired on the SyFy Channel over Thanksgiving weekend, reveals the moment Gandalf the Gray (Sir Ian McKellen) gives his hairy-footed friend (Martin Freeman) a trusty sidekick that glows blue when danger is near.
Along with the elvish weapon comes a bit of touching advice. "True courage is about knowing not when to take a life," Gandalf explains. "But when to spare one."
