‘Hobbs & Shaw’ Trailer Pits Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham Against ‘Black Superman’ Idris Elba (Video)

“Fast & Furious” spinoff explodes into theaters Aug. 2

Dwayne Johnson’s lawman Luke Hobbs teams up with Jason Statham’s rogue former intelligence operative Deckard Shaw to take on a common enemy — a genetically enhanced bad guy played by Idris Elba who calls himself “Black Superman” — in the explosive first trailer for the upcoming “Hobbs & Shaw.”

David Leitch’s film, a spinoff from the “Fast & Furious” franchise that has grossed nearly $ 5 billion over the course of eight films, seems to be packed with all of the quick banter and muscular stunt work that have been the hallmark of the series.

Ever since Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and Shaw (Statham) first faced off in 2015’s “Furious 7,” the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down.

But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever — and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (“The Crown” alum Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister —  these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves.

Helen Mirren also makes an appearance as the siblings’ Cockney-accented mom.

The trailer “Hobbs & Shaw” for features footage that suggest the wide range of locations for the shoot, from Los Angeles to London to Chernobyl to the island nation of Samoa.

Leitch (“Deadpool 2”) directed from a script by longtime “Fast & Furious” narrative architect Chris Morgan, the film is produced by Morgan, Johnson, Statham and Hiram Garcia.

The executive producers are Dany Garcia, Kelly McCormick, Steven Chasman, Ethan Smith and Ainsley Davies.

Universal will release the movie in theaters August 2.
