“Green Book” director Peter Farrelly returns after his film won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2019 for a new adventure: “The Greatest Beer Run Ever” starring Zac Efron and Russell Crowe. Farrelly recently sat down with TheWrap in its Toronto International Film Festival Studio with Shutterstock to talk about the true story at the heart of his upcoming film.
“Somebody sent me a 12-minute documentary that Andrew Muscato did about the greatest beer run ever, and I just couldn’t believe what I was looking at, that this guy actually went to Vietnam during the war, somehow found his way around the country and dropped off beers with people and happened to get there right before the Tet Offensive. I was like, ‘That’s unbelievable,’” he told TheWrap’s Brian Welk after the movie’s world premiere on Sept. 13.

What Is “The Greatest Beer Run Ever” About?
In real life, the man who did the beer run, Jon “Chickie” Donohugh, wanted to support his friends in the Vietnam War, so he made a game plan to deliver beer to all of the soldiers he knew fighting in the war. Zac Efron’s character hails from Boston, and he doesn’t truly understand the controversy of the Vietnam War, but slowly he begins to realize that it’s no joke, with the help of friends who explain it to him. Farrelly co-wrote the script with Brian Curre and Pete Jones, and their adaptation is based on the book “The Greatest Beer Run Ever: A Memoir of Friendship, Loyalty and War” by Joanna Molloy and the real John “Chickie” Donohugh.
