IMAX Set to Open Its First Theater In Egypt

The move will bring the company, which is in the middle of an aggressive international expansion, into its 46th country

IMAX, which is aggressively increasing its screen profile overseas, has made a deal to open its first theater in Egypt.

The new IMAX theater will open in an 18-screen multiplex in East Cairo. It will be the 12th IMAX theater in the Middle East. It is scheduled to open in 2014.

The Egyptian screen will be operated by Misr International Films.

“Misr International Films has a strong connection with moviegoers in Egypt, and we believe that connection, combined with their extensive knowledge of the market, is the perfect way to introduce the IMAX Experience to new audiences in the country,” IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond said in a written statement. “This new relationship continues the momentum of our network expansion in the EMEA region, which remains an important part of our overall international growth strategy for 2011.”

As of Nov. 1, 2010, there were 470 IMAX theaters in 45 countries.
