IMAX Signs Deal to Remaster More Huayi Bros. Films

IMAX is already set to release four of the Chinese firms films in local theaters in the coming months

IMAX Corporation expanded its partnership with Huayi Bros. agreeing to digitally remaster three more of the Chinese studio's films, the companies announced Wednesday in Beijing.

The two firms had already agreed to remaster four movies and those titles will be released in IMAX theaters across China over the next few months. The schedule starts on Sept. 27 with "Tai Chi 0," followed by "Tai Chi Hero" on Oct. 25, "Chinese Zodiac" on Dec. 20 and "Back to 1942," on a date yet to be announced.

The companies did not disclose the titles of the three forthcoming additions to IMAX's roster.

The company previously reformatted one of the studio's films, "Aftershock: the IMAX Experience," the first digitally remastered Chinese IMAX title. It grossed more than $102 million when it was released in July 2010.

"We are delighted to expand our partnership with Huayi Bros. as they share our commitment to showcasing the incredible talent and passion of Chinese cinema," Richard L. Gelfond, the CEO of IMAX, said in a statement. "Today, we are delivering on our promise to present more local-language titles in IMAX for Chinese audiences to enjoy."

In June, IMAX signed a deal to open five theaters in China.

IMAX began ramping up its presence in East Asia over the last several months, opening its first theater in Indonesia last December.
