Indie Box Office: Double-Dip Weekend for Mark Duplass

It was a big weekend for Mark Duplass at the specialty box office.

"Your Sister's Sister," in which he stars with Emily Blunt and Rosemarie Dewitt, opened on 13 screens and took in $117,000, a $9,000 per-screen average. The IFC film was written and directed by Lynn Shelton ("Humpday"). 

Meanwhile, "Safety Not Guaranteed," the time-travel comedy he executive produced with his brother Jay, expanded into Phoenix, Austin, San Francisco, Dallas and Atlanta and rolled up $295,000 from 47 theaters.

That's a solid $6,277 per-screen average for Derek Connolly's tale of magazine employees who interview a guy who placed a classified ad seeking a companion for time travel. FilmDistrict is distributing.

Aubrey Plaza, Jake M. Johnson and Karan Soni star in the R-rated movie, directed by Colin Trevorrow.

Fox Searchlight's "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" crossed the $35 million mark in its seventh weekend and was the No. 8 film in the U.S. The film, which has been in the top ten for the last six weeks, made $2.2 million, dropping only 31% in 1,184 locations.

Focus Features' "Moonrise Kingdom" cracked the top ten for the first time at No 9. Focus expanded it into 178 theaters and took in $2.1 million, a glossy $12,253 per-screen average, good for ninth place.

The Wes Anderson film, which opened this year's Cannes Film Festival, has now grossed $6.7 million since opening in the U.S. four weeks ago.

The Weinstein Co.'s "The Intouchables" managed $356,000 from 77 theaters, a $4,623 per-screen average, to raise its four-week domestic gross to $1.5 million.

"Peace Love and Misunderstanding," another IFC film, managed $138,600 from 77 screens, a $1,800 per-screen average that upped its U.S. grosses to $279,000.

Fox Searchlight's "Lola Versus" did $59,314 for the weekend for a cumulative total of $105,500 after its first 10 days.
