Amazon released a new trailer for the upcoming eight-episode first season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” on Monday, a drama that features John Krasinski in the titular role previously played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine.
But Krasinski’s Jack Ryan is different than all the others, as co-creator Carlton Cuse (“Lost”) told Entertainment Weekly the series — which has already been renewed for a Season 2 ahead of its premiere — sets up how the badass we all know and love came to be.
“It’s sort of a prequel to the versions of him that you meet in the movies and books,” Cuse said. The show follows Jack Ryan at a “critical moment where he goes from being an analyst to being an operative in the CIA.”
That narrative is set up in the very first moments of the trailer where Jack is sitting at a table with a man he kidnapped off the street to interrogate and asks him if he does this often.
“You’re my first one actually,” Ryan says. “How am I doing?”
The rest of the 2-minute, 22-second video thrusts you into Jack’s world, as he is pulled into an operation he doesn’t think he’s prepared to carry out after working a lowly desk job writing reports as an analyst. Spoiler alert: it looks like he can.
The cast also includes Wendell Pierce, Timothy Hutton, Mena Massoud, Abbie Cornish, who co-stars as Jack’s doctor fiancée, and “The Looming Tower” star Ali Suliman.

“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” launches on August 31 on Amazon.
