ABC has picked up half-hour comedies “Pearl” and “Speechless” to pilot.

“Pearl,” which hails from ABC Studios, is written and executive produced by Andrew Reich.

The single-camera project follows a larger-than-life family matriarch, who, when finds out she has cancer, becomes intent on controlling and orchestrating every aspect of her family’s life before she dies.

“Speechless,” from 20th Century Fox, will be written and executive produced by Scott Silveri. Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar will also executive produce.

That single-camera sitcom follows a family with a special-needs child that is good at dealing with the challenges it faces — and excellent at creating new ones.
