It's pretty much assumed at this point that James Franco will receive his first Oscar nomination for his performance in Danny Boyle's "127 Hours," but what will the actor turn his attention to after wrapping 20th Century Fox's "Rise of the Apes?"
According to Deadline, Franco has purchased Stephen Elliott's "The Adderall Diaries: A Memoir of Moods, Masochism and Murder," and plans to write, direct and star in the feature film adaptation.
"The Adderall Diaries" follows reformed tweaker and BDSM-enthusiast Elliott covering a murder trial that takes some pretty strange turns. It'll be an ambitious project for Franco to tackle, but I have complete faith that he'll be able to navigate the tricky structure of the book.
The former "Freaks and Geeks" star is a truly committed artist who should be applauded for his willingness to take risks. He deserves credit for throwing himself completely into the projects he chooses to work on, whether it's a soap opera like "General Hospital" or a high-minded prestige picture like "127 Hours."
Franco has previously directed a couple features and a handful of short films, having recently stepped behind the camera for "Saturday Night," a documentary about "Saturday Night Live" that Oscilloscope will distribute next year.
The Emmy-winning actor was last seen in "Eat Pray Love," and aside from "127 Hours," he next stars in David Gordon Green's medieval comedy "Your Highness."
Franco is represented by WME and James/Levy management.
