‘Joker’: Jared Leto Standalone Movie Looks Like a Go (Report)

Leto will star and executive produce the untitled DC Comics film

Jared Leto Joker Suicide Squad

Jared Leto is set to reprise his, uh, unique take on the Joker he debuted in 2016’s “Suicide Squad” in a standalone “Joker” movie, according to a report in Variety.

Leto will star and executive produce the untitled DC Comics film. Plot details are currently under the wraps and Leto and the studio are currently out to writers for a take.

The first “Suicide Squad,” which starred Will Smith and Margot Robbie, earned nearly $750 million worldwide on a budget of $175 million.

Gavin O’Connor is expected to write and possibly direct “Suicide Squad 2,” an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.

Meanwhile, Leto’s costar Margot Robbie has become something of a DC Comics expert since joining “Suicide Squad,” and has taken an interest in “Birds of Prey.” The film is not a Quinn solo movie, but would feature multiple female superheroes — and possibly villains — in the DC Comics universe.  Screenwriter Christina Hodson is scripting the Harley Quinn/Birds of Prey spinoff for Warner Bros. and DC Films, TheWrap has learned exclusively. DC die-hards may remember that “Birds of Prey” was also a short-lived series on The WB network in 2002-3, featuring Mia Sara as Harley.

Cathy Yan is in early talks to direct Margot Robbie in the next Harley Quinn movie, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Leto is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.
