Jeffrey Epstein has been found injured in his jail cell, NBC New York reported Wednesday night.

Epstein was found semi-conscious and in a fetal position, with marks on his neck, according to WNBC. It is unclear how Epstein sustained his injuries. The network cited individuals with knowledge of the investigation who gave conflicting accounts of the situation.

Two anonymous individuals told WNBC that Epstein may have been injured in a suicide attempt. Another unnamed individual cited by WNBC said that Epstein’s injuries were minor, and suggested the possibility he may have faked a suicide attempt.

And the network reported that a fourth individual said the injuries could have been sustained during an attack, and that another inmate was being questioned. WNBC reported that Epstein had been placed on suicide watch.

Representatives for the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City, where Epstein is being held, and prosecutors in the case did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Epstein’s attorneys also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Epstein was arrested earlier this month and charged with sex trafficking by federal prosecutors, but over a decade prior to that, he pleaded guilty in Florida to soliciting a minor for prostitution. He served 13 months of an 18-month sentence and was released in 2009.

Federal prosecutors have said that Epstein sexually abused dozens of underage girls and paid many of them to recruit others. Investigators also said they found “nude photographs of what appear to be underage girls” during a search of his mansion after his arrest. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Epstein was denied a request for bail last week. “I doubt that any bail package can overcome danger to the community,” U.S. District Judge Richard Berman said at the time.
