Jodie Foster Directing Hostage Drama ‘Money Monster’

Jodie Foster will direct "Money Monster," a film about a TV host held hostage for giving bad financial advice

Jodie Foster is set to direct "Money Monster," IM Global said Thursday.

Getty ImagesIt's a story that should send chills up the spine of the "Squawk Box" set. "Money Monster" centers on a TV personality whose bad financial tips cause one viewer to lose all of his savings. To get revenge, he holds the TV host hostage on the air, which in true media-circus fashion instantly becomes a ratings sensation.

The TV personality at the center of this crisis doesn't sound like such a great character, having derived many of his stock tips from insider trades.

Foster is best known for her Oscar-winning performances in "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991) and "The Accused" (1988), but she has substantial directing experience. Among her films are the acclaimed child prodigy drama "Little Man Tate" (1991) and the family comedy "Home for the Holidays" (1995). Her most recent directing effort, "The Beaver" (2011), was a casualty of star Mel Gibson's tabloid troubles, causing it to bomb at the box office.

Foster will next be seen in Neill Blomkamp's science-fiction drama "Elysium," which hits theaters next spring.

Casting on "Money Monster" will begin immediately, IM Global said. Production is expected to start in 2013.
