Joel Kinnaman is returning to Netflix and will star in the sci-fi drama series “Altered Carbon,” TheWrap has learned.

The series is based on Richard Morgan’s 2002 novel of the same name, which is set in the 25th century in a time when humans have populated the galaxy and a person’s consciousness can be downloaded into new host bodies, provided one can afford the expensive procedure.

Kinnaman will play the protagonist, Takeshi Kovacs, an ex-U.N. envoy who is thrust into a dark conspiracy hundreds of light years from home after being imprisoned for 500 years.

Laeta Kalogridis will write the script for the 10-episode series.
