John Oliver has seen this defense before. The “Last Week Tonight” host says Donald Trump and his allies over at Fox News Channel are “going full O.J.” in their attempt to discredit special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into potential campaign collusion with Russia, which many conservatives are calling a “witch hunt.”
This is all a bit too familiar to the HBO personality.
“A sociopathic, misogynist millionaire evolved from celebrity to undeserving folk hero, suddenly has evidence piling up that he may have done something terrible, and he puts the whole system on trial,” Oliver said of Trump and the unsavory accusations over outside interference in the 2016 presidential election. “If that sounds familiar to all of you, it’s basically because that’s the story of O.J. all over again.”
“Trump is going full O.J. — and it’s working,” the “Daily Show” alum continued.
Oliver described the strategy as one that attempts to “sway a jury by building a wild and plausible conspiracy that the system is corrupted.”
To complete his O.J. Simpson double-homicide trial analogy, Oliver pulled up a video of defense attorney Barry Scheck. That footage from the ’90s led to an amusing modern-day sock callback.
