John Oliver Urges Congress to Intervene After James Comey Firing: ‘It’s On You’ (Video)

“They need to acknowledge that what has happened is f-cked up and not continue to give non answers,” “Last Week” Tonight” host says

John Oliver slammed President Trump for firing former FBI Director James Comey Sunday on “Last Week Tonight,” urging Congress to intervene.

“It is time for each and every one of them to pick a lane here. They do have options,” Oliver said. “They need to acknowledge that what has happened is f-cked up and not continue to give non answers.”

Oliver also ripped Republican members of Congress who remain passive when it comes to criticizing Trump.

“The founding fathers created a system of checks and balances to limit the power of the president,” Oliver said. “But it only works if someone f-cking checks or balances. And if you don’t, it’s no longer on Trump. It’s on you.”

Oliver brought up a tweet Trump sent last week that appeared to threaten Comey and allude to secret tapes of a private conversation the two men had.

“Tweets like that are actually really difficult to parse, because they are somehow both a borderline obstruction of justice and the meaningless rantings of a confused old idiot,” Oliver said.

The HBO funnyman continued: “Trump has made it very clear. He fired the director of the FBI at least partially due to unhappiness with the Bureau’s investigation into his campaign’s possible collusion with Russia.”
