Johnny Depp Starrer ‘Transcendence’ Gives Summit AFM Hit (Exclusive)

Summit has taken on sales duties for the Johnny Depp sci-fi/fantasy feature “Transcendence,” the film that has created the biggest buzz this week at the AFM

Who says that you can’t sell a $100 million movie at the American Film Market?

Summit has taken on sales duties for “Transcendence,” a sci-fi /fantasy feature budgeted at $120 million, and is selling the film to international buyers this week at the annual film market. The film has created the biggest buzz of the week, in a market where buyers say there are few notable titles.

Getty Images“Transcendence” stars Johnny Depp and is being directed by Wally Pfister. It was   written by Jack Paglen. Broderick Johnson, Andrew A. Kosove, Kate Cohen, Annie Marter, Marisa Polvino and David Valdes are producing the film, with Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas executive producing. The production is by Alcon Entertainment and Straight Up Films.

The story follows three scientists, attempting work on stem cell and advanced computer technology, which  will change the fundamentals of human life. Tension comes into play when they are met by protest and resistance. The  film is due to start shooting in February 2013.

Warner Bros. is handling domestic distribution.

Other films topping the Lionsgate slate at this year’s AFM include Neil Burger’s “Divergent” with Shailene Woodley; “Pawn Sacrifice,” with Tobey Maguire, which Ed Zwick is directing; and “Venus in Fur” from Roman Polanski.

The company is also handling “Pompeii” in 3D from Paul W.S. Anderson, as well as another Alcon title, “Prisoners” from Denis Villeneuve.
