Jon Stewart: Gaza Strip or Gosling Stripped?

"The Daily Show" host wants to talk about the Middle East, but that pesky Ryan Gosling keeps popping up instead

When it comes to the crisis in the Middle East, the team at “The Daily Show” is having a little trouble differentiating between a bloody religious conflict and the hunky star of “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”

Jon Stewart was talking about the violent standoff that erupted this month between Israel and Hamas, but instead of an illustration of the Gaza Strip, his production team provided an ab-tastic shot of Ryan Gosling under the headline "Conflict in the Gosling Stripped."

“I think I found a way to solve this conflict, somebody needs to surrender some holy land,” Stewart said while gazing at the Oscar-nominee's well-toned musculature.

But Stewart wasn't just interested in word play. He also took time on Monday night's broadcast to skewer the news media for trying to pick winners and losers in the weeklong conflict that has taken the lives of more than 150 people.

“You really miss the election, don’t you,” Stewart said. “Is everything about the winners and losers in the horse race? Even intractable bloodshed, it’s just another chance to check in on who’s incrementally up or incrementally down. And by the way, winners and losers in what game — Sandyland?”

"This is such a depressing, cyclical status quo where the untenable underlying conditions are never addressed,” he added. “There are no winners here.”
