After “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” became a box office hit despite being released a week after “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Sony Pictures is sending Dwayne Johnson and the “Jumanji” team to take on the Force again as the studio set “Jumanji 3” for release on December 13, 2019.

While “Welcome to the Jungle” was released five days after “The Last Jedi,” this threequel will be released a week before “Star Wars: Episode IX,” showing signs that Sony is confident that the film and the cast of Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black have earned enough popularity to perform well against one of the biggest movie series of all time.

At this point, “Jumanji 3” does not have any serious competition, though Universal does have a placeholder for a Blumhouse project in that release slot. Sony also has a David S. Goyer-directed adaptation of “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” set for release that month, while Universal will release a film version of the musical “Wicked” the same weekend as “Episode IX.”

Johnson first announced the release date on his Instagram page.
