Kelly Clarkson Talks Candidly About Fat Shaming: ‘Welcome to the Past 13 Years’ (Video)

Her comments on her weight come a month after responding to insults from a British TV personality

In light of Kelly Clarkson’s weight being criticized by British TV personality Katie Hopkins last month, the singer said it’s nothing new while appearing on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Friday.

“I love how people think that’s new,” Clarkson, who has already shrugged off Hopkins’ insults, said. “Like, welcome to the past 13 years!”

Hopkins, apparently the “most hated woman in Britain,” called attention to Clarkson’s size on Twitter in late February while the first season “American Idol” winner appeared on “The Graham Norton Show.”

“Jesus, what happened to Kelly Clarkson? Did she eat all of her backing singers?” Hopkins said in one of many tweets about the “Heartbeat Song” singer, who recently gave birth to her first child.

“I was the biggest girl in [‘American Idol’], too. And I wasn’t big, but people would call me big. Because I was the biggest one on ‘Idol’ and I’ve kind of always gotten that,” Clarkson told DeGeneres. “People are like, ‘I’m so sorry that lady in London was so mean to you.’ And I’m like, ‘Are you serious? Like get in line.'”

While Clarkson seems to be immune to the negativity that has been hurled at her body image throughout her entire career, DeGeneres said criticism has hurt her feelings.

“I think what hurts my feelings for people is that I’ll have a meet and greet after the show and a girl who is bigger than me will be in the meet and greet and be like, ‘Wow, if they think you’re big, I must be so fat to them,'” Clarkson said. “And it’s like you’re just who you are. We are who we are. Whatever size. And it doesn’t meant hat we’re gonna be that forever. That’s the thing. Sometimes we’re more fit.”

“I’m such a creative person that I yo-yo,” Clarkson continued. “So sometimes I’m more fit, and I get into kickboxing hardcore. And then sometimes I don’t, and I’m like, ‘I’d rather have wine.'”
