Kevin Costner is back in the inspirational sports drama genre with “McFarland, USA,” based on a true story about an underdog high school track team.
The film, formerly titled simply “McFarland” before it got an injection of patriotism, follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically-challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley. With the arrival of Coach Jim White (Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school, the students begin to tap into their natural running ability and change the course of their lives.
The unlikely band of runners eventually overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team, but an enduring legacy for the community and achieve their own kind of American dream.
Maria Bello, Morgan Saylor, Martha Higareda, Michael Aguero, Sergio Avelar, Hector Duran and Rafael Martinez round out the cast of the Niki Caro-directed film, which is produced by Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray.
Disney will release “McFarland, USA” on Feb. 20, 2015.
