KitchenAid Redfaced After Slamming Obama’s Dead Grandmother During Debate (Seriously)

KitchenAid – yes, that one – tweeted a joke about the president's dead grandmother during the debate

KitchenAid – yes, that KitchenAid, maker of blenders – was left red-faced after tweeting a joke about the president’s dead grandmother during the presidential debate on Wednesday night.

“Obamas gma even knew it was going 2 b bad! ‘She died 3 days b4 he became president,’” tweeted @KitchenAidUSA, which has about 25,000 followers.

The tweet was quickly deleted, but not before being thoroughly shared in the Twitterverse. The company hastened to apologize – though it didn’t offer any explanation for its entirely weird sense of humor. (The small-appliance maker seems to have developed a funny bone overnight; its other tweets are about peanut butter recipes.)

As media picked up the story, the head of the company messaged:

“Hello, everyone. My name is Cynthia Soledad, and I am the head of the KitchenAid brand. I would like to personally apologize to President @BarackObama, his family and everyone on Twitter for the offensive tweet sent earlier. It was carelessly sent in error by a member of our Twitter team who, needless to say, won’t be tweeting for us anymore. That said, I take full responsibility for my team. Thank you for hearing me out”

The offending tweet was apparently in response to Obama’s remark during the debate about government programs like Medicare, and his grandmother.

"You know, my grandmother — some of you know — helped to raise me," he said. “My grandfather died a while back. My grandmother died three days before I was elected president. And she was fiercely independent. She worked her way up, only had a high school education, started as a secretary, ended up being the vice president of a local bank. And she ended up living alone by choice."

Tag that: Dead grandmother jokes. Social media. And tag KitchenAid: In very bad taste.
