‘Kony 2012’ Director Suffering from ‘Reactive Psychosis,’ Wife Says

“Kony 2012” director Jason Russell, detained last week for public nudity, is suffering from ‘reactive psychosis’ according to his wife Danica

Jason Russell, the director of the viral “Kony 2012” film who has been in medical care since being detained by the police last week, is suffering from “reactive psychosis,” his wife wrote in a blog post.

Russell, who is a co-founder of non-profit organization Invisible Children, was detained last week for public nudity, as well as alleged masturbation and vandalism.

The San Diego Police Department said that Russell was acting irrationally and erratically, but found nothing to substantiate the reports of masturbation or vandalism.

The police transferred Russell to a medical facility for care. Though early reports said that drugs and alcohol were involved, that has never been confirmed,

Danica Russell, Jason’s wife, insists that his “incident was in no way the result of drugs or alcohol.”

Instead, it is a result of exhaustion, stress and dehydration. That echoes a similar statement from the group last Friday (though Danica thankfully left out the excuse of “malnutrition”).

“Though new to us, the doctors say this is a common experience given the great mental, emotional and physical shock his body has gone through in these last two weeks. Even for us, it’s hard to understand the sudden transition from relative anonymity to worldwide attention — both raves and ridicules, in a matter of days,” Danica wrote.

Jason was cast into the public spotlight as the “Kony” video drew more than 100 million viewers across the Internet in a matter of weeks. This phenomenon has produced articles in major publications across the globe.

Some have also questioned the organization’s motivations, but the group has responded, arguing it has been completely transparent. It has asked its supporters to continue the fight as Russell would want.
