David Letterman is shooting back at Dick Ebersol, the NBC executive who attacked Letterman and Conan O’Brien as "gutless" for their jokes about Jay Leno.
During a segment on tonight’s CBS "Late Show," Ebersol notes that he has known the NBC U sports chief for decades. "He was a guy. He was always a guy. And he still is a guy," Letterman said.
But he doesn’t understand Ebersol’s motivation for speaking out.
He "feels he has to get in there and help Big Jaw," Dave said, referring to Leno. "How did this happen? He really right now should be busy….picking out sweaters for Bob Costas. He doesn’t have time for this!"
When he saw Ebersol’s comments in the New York Times last week, "I’m thinking ‘Oh,Dick. Dick, Dick, Dick, Dick. Leave us alone. We’re having fun!"
Letterman then moved in for the kill.
"I can’t speak for Conan O’Brien," pausing for comedic effect. "For the sake of the discussion, yes, I’m chicken-hearted. And yes, I’m gutless. But these two characteristics have nothing to do with the current situation.
"I’m telling jokes and making fun of Jay Leno … relentlessly … mercilessly …f or one reason: I’m really enjoying it. It’s, I don’t know- it’s just fun!"
The clip below starts with Letterman doing more of his wicked Leno impersonation, mocking Leno for his "Mr. America" image. Check it out:
