The world will be exposed to yet another iteration of The Joker when the Todd Phillips-directed “Joker” hits theaters on Friday. But before audiences see Joaquin Phoenix’s take on the Clown Prince of Crime, they can get a taste of an even more haunting version courtesy of Tuesday’s “A Little Late With Lilly Singh”: The Joke-Her.
“You’ve seen the Joker as a failed stand-up comic, as a criminal mastermind, as a sexy club kid — and whatever the hell was happening in the ’60s,” a voiceover announcer said during a montage of clips of actors Phoenix, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto and Cesar Romero in their different on-screen portrays of the character.
“Now get ready for the most terrifying iteration of The Joker yet: a lady,” he said in a menacing tone, as Singh walked out wearing The Joker’s trademark red, grinning-mouth makeup.
Singh then goes about her day as a woman in a corporate setting, doing things like asking for reports to be on her desk at a certain time (“A twist leader with dark demands”), trying to use the men’s restroom when the ladies bathroom is occupied (“A renegade who wants to watch the world burn”) and explaining how she got her job (“With the most depraved and haunting origin story yet”).
“Joke-Her — it’s feminist or whatever,” the narrator said before Singh realizes no one told her she had lipstick all over her face. OK, so that makeup thing wasn’t intentional, got it.
