Seventeen different films, including the short-listed Oscar entries “Stan & Ollie,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Mary Queen of Scots,” “Vice” and “Black Panther,” have received nominations for the Make Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild’s 6th Annual MUAHS Guild Awards.

Nine of those films received two nominations in the guild’s five movie categories: The five that are also on the Oscar makeup and hair short list, plus “A Star Is Born,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Widows” and “Mary Poppins.”

Two films made the Oscar short list but were not nominated for MUAHS Guild Awards: the Swedish film “Border” and the Luca Guadagnino horror remake “Suspiria.”

A number of the top nominees featured makeup artists transforming actors into historical figures from the past and present: Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly as Laurel and Hardy in “Stan & Ollie,” Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie as Mary Stuart and Queen Elizabeth I in “Mary Queen of Scots,” Christian Bale as Dick Cheney in “Vice.”

In the television categories, “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” was the most-nominated show, with multiple nominations also going to “Saturday Night Live,” “Westworld,” “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” “King Lear” and “Oprah Winfrey Presents: Becoming Michelle Obama.”

The MUAHS Guild Awards also includes nominations for achievements in daytime television, commercials and music videos and theatrical productions.

The winners will be announced on Feb. 16 at the Novo in downtown Los Angeles’ L.A. Live complex. Also at that show, actress Melissa McCarthy will receive the 2019 Distinguished Artisan Award, while makeup artist Susan Cabral-Ebert and hair stylist Robert Louis Stevenson will receive lifetime achievement awards.
