‘Man of Steel’ Trailer: General Zod Warns Earthlings to Surrender Superman

Michael Shannon may send a shiver up your spine

General Zod is a heck of a lot scarier than Kryptonite.

The interstellar supervillain is front and center in a new trailer for "Man of Steel" that plays more like a spin-off of "Cloverfield" than it does a teaser for a man-in-tights flick.

As Zod takes control of the airwaves, a scroll announces, "You are not alone."

"I have journeyed across an ocean of stars to reach you," Zod intones, informing the people of earth that he seeks the man he knows as Kal-El.

"To those of you who know of his location, the fate of your planet rests in your hands," he adds.

To prove that he means business, the trailer for "Man of Steel" overflows with exploding cities and impressive-looking alien gadgetry. It's all part of director Zack Snyder's ambition to cast away the ponderousness that weighed down Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns," in favor of a more action-driven storyline.

The clashes and fireballs hurtle by at a breakneck pace, so if you are hoping to unpack the trailer's mysteries on a frame by frame basis, head over here.

Henry Cavill stars as Superman, Michael Shannon portrays General Zod and Amy Adams takes on Lois Lane. "Man of Steel" hits theaters on June 14.
