In the midst of a post-apocalyptic landscape, Margot Robbie, Chris Pine and Chiwetel Ejiofor find themselves in an emotionally charged love triangle in the new trailer for “Z for Zachariah.”

The newly released trailer opens with gas masks and contamination suits, and reveals now-brown-haired Robbie as she combs through a valley. Only then, after a year without seeing any other survivors, does she discover Ejiofor’s character.

Navigating the now lonely place together, they become attracted to one another — until Caleb (Chris Pine) shows up.

A dangerous love triangle ensues as the last three remaining people on earth discover secrets about one another. It doesn’t take long for their primal urges to reveal their true nature.

Craig Zobel, known for “Compliance,” is directing the film. The movie is based on Robert C. O’Brien’s post-apocalyptic science fiction novel of the same title, which was published in 1974. Executive producers are Barry Brooker and Stan Wertlieb. Tobey Maguire is one of the many producers on the film alongside Sophia Lin, Skuly Fr. Malmquist and Matthew Plouffe.

Ejiofor is best known for his role in “12 Years a Slave,” for which he won a BAFTA Film Award. He was also nominated for an Oscar and multiple Golden Globes.

Robbie got her big break when she starred as Leonardo Dicaprio‘s wife in “The Wolf of Wall Street” in 2013. She recently was seen in “Focus” with Will Smith and is filming David Ayer‘s “Suicide Squad.”

Pine is known for “Star Trek” and is currently filming the TV series, “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.”

The film was a Sundance Film Festival favorite, and two weeks before the start of the festival, the title had secured distribution, as Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions partnered on the release of the film (TheWrap reported).

“Z for Zachariah” is set to hit theaters August 21.
