Marvel Entertainment Chairman Isaac Perlmutter and his wife Laura donated more than $50 million to NYU Langone Medical Center to support cancer treatment and research, the university said Wednesday.

In recognition of the gift, NYU has renamed its cancer institute, the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone. The gift comes on top of an earlier $8 million gift the Perlmutters donated to the hospital.

The funds will be used to coordinate programs, attract talent and support the discovery of new treatments for cancer and study its causes.

Laura Perlmutter has been involved with NYU Langone for more than three decades, starting as a women’s auxiliary volunteer in the hospital’s gift shop, and eventually becoming president of the Tisch Hospital Auxiliary from 1985 to 1992. She has also been a member of NYU Langone’s board of trustees since 1985, and of the Cancer Advisory Board since 2005.
