It’s Wednesday, and that means a new episode of the Marvel Studios series “Marvel’s What If…?” is available to stream on Disney+. As always, the animated show — Marvel’s first ever — revived some MCU staples, but it also brought some new voices to characters that fans know and love. So, who’s in the “What If?” Episode 8 voice cast?
Episode 8, titled “What If… Ultron Won?,” imagines a world in which, well, Ultron won against the Avengers. In the MCU, our heroes were able to stop Tony Stark’s creation from getting his hands on the body that would eventually become Vision and use it to help them defeat Ultron in Sokovia.
But that didn’t happen in “What If…?” Instead, Ultron was able to upload himself into the body and, using the power of the Mind Stone, lay waste to Earth. The episode opens on Clint and Natasha — yes, voiced by their original live action counterparts — in Russia, trying to take out a hoard of Ultron’s sentries.
This particular episode brings in a number of existing MCU characters. Jeffrey Wright once again returned as the series narrator, The Watcher, but there were also some veterans in this week’s episode. Here are the live-action performers who reprised their roles in animated form:
- Clint Barton/Hawkeye – Jeremy Renner
- Doctor Strange/Strange Supreme – Benedict Cumberbatch
- Arnim Zola – Toby Jones
But as always, there were some OGs who didn’t make it back for “What If…?,” so some new voice performers took their places. They included:
- Ultron/Ultron Sentries – Ross Marquand
- Steve Rogers/Captain America – Josh Keaton
- Tony Stark/Iron Man – Mick Wingert
- Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel – Alexandra Daniels
- Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow – Lake Bell
Now, when we say Ultron lays waste to the world, we mean that quite literally. Accomplishing another goal of his from “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” he manages to get his hands on the nuclear codes and wipes out a good portion of humanity — including several Avengers. And in an unfortunate twist for Clint Barton, in this world, he’s lost an arm. In its place is a bionic metal one, similar to that of Bucky Barnes.
Thanos even shows up in this episode, but it’s very brief — Ultron goes straight for the head… and then the rest of the body.
You can stream the latest episode of Marvel’s “What If…?” on Disney+ now.
